The Serpae Tetra is easily recognized by its deep red or reddish-brown body, which can range from a bright scarlet to a more subdued brick red. The fish typically has a darker patch near the gills and a characteristic black spot behind the gills. The fins are often edged with black, adding to the fish's striking appearance. The dorsal fin may also have a white tip, further enhancing its visual appeal.
