Description

The Malawi Haps Cichlid Giraffe (Size 2" to 2.5"), also known as Nimbochromis venustus, is a striking and unique species native to Lake Malawi. Commonly referred to as the Giraffe Hap due to its distinctive mottled pattern, resembling the coat of a giraffe, this cichlid is known for its predatory nature and eye-catching appearance. Even at a juvenile size, the Giraffe Cichlid shows the beginnings of its signature pattern and is a fascinating addition to a cichlid aquarium.

Appearance: At 2" to 2.5", the juvenile Giraffe Cichlid already starts to display its characteristic giraffe-like spots. The base color of the body is a light tan or yellow, adorned with irregular brown or black blotches that resemble the pattern on a giraffe’s coat. As the fish matures, the spots become more defined, and the males develop brighter colors, including vibrant blue on the head and fins. The juvenile has a streamlined, elongated body built for swift movement, with fins that are lightly colored but become more vivid as they age.

Behavior and Temperament: The Giraffe Cichlid is a predator, known for its ambush hunting technique. It will often lie motionless on the substrate, blending in with the surroundings, before suddenly striking at unsuspecting prey. Despite its predatory tendencies, it is considered semi-aggressive and can coexist with other large, robust cichlids, provided there is enough space in the tank. However, smaller fish may be seen as prey, so tank mates should be chosen carefully. Juveniles tend to be less aggressive, but as they grow, they become more territorial.

Habitat Requirements: In its natural habitat, the Giraffe Cichlid is found in sandy and rocky areas of Lake Malawi. To replicate this in an aquarium, a tank with a sandy substrate and plenty of rock formations or caves is ideal. The Giraffe Cichlid enjoys having hiding spots but also requires open areas for swimming and hunting. A tank size of at least 340 litres is recommended for juveniles, but adults will need significantly more space due to their size and territorial nature. Water parameters should be kept stable, with a pH between 7.5 and 8.5 and temperatures of 76°F to 82°F. A strong filtration system is important to maintain water quality, and regular water changes are necessary to keep the environment clean and healthy.

Diet: The Giraffe Cichlid is carnivorous and thrives on a protein-rich diet. Juveniles can be fed high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, as well as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. As the fish matures, larger food items such as shrimp, krill, or feeder fish can be added to their diet. They are opportunistic feeders, and live prey helps stimulate their natural hunting behavior.
