Description
The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a stunning and iconic freshwater fish that is highly prized for its vibrant colors and peaceful demeanor. Growing to about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length, this small fish is renowned for its brilliant, iridescent blue stripe that runs horizontally from the eye to the tail, perfectly complemented by a vivid red stripe beneath it that spans the lower half of the body. The combination of these colors makes the Cardinal Tetra one of the most visually striking fish in the aquarium hobby.
Native to the slow-moving, tannin-rich blackwater streams and tributaries of the Amazon Basin in South America, Cardinal Tetras thrive in soft, acidic water with plenty of plant cover. They are schooling fish, best kept in groups of six or more, where they exhibit natural schooling behavior and feel most secure. In a planted tank, the vibrant blue and red colors of the Cardinal Tetra contrast beautifully with the lush green plants, creating a dynamic and visually appealing display.
Cardinal Tetras prefer stable water conditions with a temperature range of 73-81°F (23-27°C) and a slightly acidic pH between 4.0 and 7.0. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with dim lighting and a gentle water flow, which closely mimics their natural habitat. The presence of plants not only enhances their coloration but also provides them with much-needed shelter and security.
As omnivores, Cardinal Tetras require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant colors. They readily accept high-quality flake or micro-pellet food, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Offering a varied diet helps to keep them healthy and ensures their colors remain bright and vivid.
Cardinal Tetras are peaceful and get along well with other small, non-aggressive fish species, making them an excellent choice for community tanks. Their stunning coloration, gentle nature, and compatibility with planted tanks make Cardinal Tetras a favorite among aquarists, adding a touch of natural beauty and tranquility to any freshwater aquarium.
