Description
The Boesemani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) is a stunning freshwater species known for its brilliant, dual-toned coloration. Native to the lakes of Indonesia's West Papua region, this species showcases an eye-catching blend of colors that change from deep blue or purple at the front half of its body to bright orange or yellow at the back, making it one of the most visually striking rainbowfish species. Males display the most intense colors, especially as they mature, while females are usually more muted in their coloration.
Boesemani Rainbowfish can grow to about 4-5 inches in length and are active, peaceful swimmers. They do best in groups of at least six to minimize stress and promote social behavior. A tank of at least 40 gallons is recommended, with water temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C) and a pH range of 7.0-8.0. They prefer a planted aquarium with open swimming areas, as they are highly energetic and require space to move around.
These omnivorous fish need a balanced diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, as well as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Due to their peaceful nature, Boesemani Rainbowfish are great in community tanks, where they can coexist with other non-aggressive species.
With their vibrant colors, active demeanor, and peaceful temperament, Boesemani Rainbowfish are highly popular among aquarists. When provided with good care, they can live for around 5-8 years.
