Description
The Geophagus Red Head Tapajos (3-4 cm) is a juvenile cichlid, renowned for its future vibrant red-orange head and peaceful temperament. Native to the Tapajos River in the Amazon Basin, this species is highly sought after by aquarists for its stunning coloration and interesting behavior.
At this small size, the fish is still in the early stages of development, and while its distinctive red head might not be fully visible yet, it will become more pronounced as the fish matures. Eventually, these fish can grow to about 15-18 cm (6-7 inches) in length, displaying bright red, orange, and metallic blue hues across their bodies.
Geophagus Red Head Tapajos are known as substrate sifters, spending much of their time near the bottom of the tank, gently sifting through sand to find food. Because of this behavior, a soft, sandy substrate is ideal to prevent injury to their gills. The tank should also feature plenty of rocks, driftwood, and hardy plants to provide hiding spots and mimic their natural environment.
This species is generally peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive fish in a community tank. However, like other cichlids, they can exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding. A tank of at least 250 litres is recommended to give them ample space to establish territories and to thrive as they grow.
Their diet at this size should consist of finely crushed high-quality cichlid pellets, along with occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. As they grow, their diet can be expanded to include more substantial foods.
The Geophagus Red Head Tapajos (3-4 cm) is a charming and promising young fish that, with proper care, will develop into a colorful and captivating addition to any freshwater aquarium.
