Description
The White Widow Skirt Tetra is a unique and striking variation of the popular Black Skirt Tetra, distinguished by its almost translucent, milky-white body. This fish typically reaches a size of about 2 inches (5 cm) when fully grown, making it a modestly sized fish that can fit comfortably in a variety of aquarium setups.
Appearance: The body of the White Widow Skirt Tetra is its most notable feature, with a soft white or silvery hue that gives it a ghostly, almost ethereal appearance in the water. The fins, which are slightly frilled and semi-transparent, add to its delicate and elegant look. The overall shape is slightly compressed, with a deep body and a high, triangular dorsal fin that is characteristic of the species.
Behavior: This fish is known for its peaceful and calm demeanor, making it an ideal candidate for community tanks. It is a schooling fish, meaning it thrives in groups, so it’s best to keep at least six individuals together. When in a group, the White Widow Skirt Tetra is more active, displaying natural behaviors and swimming in synchronized patterns, which adds a dynamic element to the aquarium.
Habitat and Tank Requirements: The White Widow Skirt Tetra prefers a well-planted aquarium, as the vegetation mimics its natural habitat and provides hiding spots, reducing stress. A tank of at least 15 gallons is recommended to accommodate a small school. The ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C), a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. The tank should have a gentle to moderate water flow, as these fish prefer calmer waters.
Diet: In terms of diet, the White Widow Skirt Tetra is not very demanding. It is an omnivore and will readily accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flake food, small pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, and the occasional vegetable matter. A balanced diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.
Compatibility: The White Widow Skirt Tetra is compatible with a wide range of other peaceful fish species. It does well in a community setting with other tetras, rasboras, small barbs, and peaceful bottom dwellers like Corydoras catfish. However, it’s best to avoid keeping them with very small fish or those with long, flowing fins, as tetras can sometimes be nippy.
Lifespan: With proper care, the White Widow Skirt Tetra can live for around 3 to 5 years. Regular water changes, a stable environment, and a varied diet will help ensure a long, healthy life for this captivating fish.
