Eleocharis montevidensis is an amazing green grass stolon aquatic plant suitable for aquariums. It is also popular with names like Giant Hairgrass and Sand Spikerush. Being a low-maintenance plant, it is beginner friendly and is not very demanding. It grows densely, where the height of different straws may grow up to 20- 40 cm; therefore, using it as a background plant is the right choice.  Regarding thickness, it is only a few millimeters thick, growing openly. Due to its varied height and flashy green color, it is perfect for creating an attractive aquascape with different depths and hues. Since Eleocharis grows through runners, regular trimming is an essentiality. 

Appearance: Eleocharis montevidensis, often referred to as Montevidensis Hairgrass, features fine, grass-like leaves that give it a delicate, grassy appearance. The leaves are thin and can vary in color from light green to a more subdued green, depending on light and nutrient conditions. The plant forms dense, tufted clumps that create a lush, carpet-like effect in the aquarium.

Size: This species is relatively small and compact. It typically reaches heights of 10-20 cm (4-8 inches), making it suitable for foreground planting in aquascapes. It grows in a dense, spreading manner, which can cover the substrate effectively.

Growth Form: Eleocharis montevidensis grows by producing runners that spread out and form new shoots. This growth habit allows it to create a carpeted effect over time, making it a popular choice for aquascaping in both freshwater and brackish tanks.

Lighting: It prefers moderate to high lighting conditions to thrive. Adequate light is crucial for promoting healthy, dense growth and maintaining its vibrant color.

Water Parameters: The plant is adaptable but does best in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions. It thrives at temperatures ranging from 22-28°C (72-82°F). It can tolerate a range of water hardness but prefers stable conditions.

Substrate: Eleocharis montevidensis benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate, but it can also grow well in standard aquarium substrates. A fine-grained substrate or sand is ideal for this plant, as it allows the runners to spread and anchor more effectively.

Fertilization: Regular fertilization supports its growth. Liquid fertilizers or root tabs can be used to provide essential nutrients. Over-fertilization should be avoided to prevent algae growth and other issues.
