Description
The silver arowana (or arawana) is a freshwater fish native to the floodplains of the Amazon. It has a long body covered in large, pearly-silver scales. Large dorsal and anal fins extend down its body to the tail, and two barbels extend from the tip of its lower jaw.
The Silver Arowana (4-5 Inches) is a stunning juvenile freshwater fish, well-known for its sleek, elongated body and iridescent silver scales that shimmer under aquarium lighting. Even at this smaller size, the Silver Arowana already displays the elegant characteristics that make it a favorite among aquarists. Native to the slow-moving rivers of South America, this species is often called the "dragon fish" due to its long, streamlined body and graceful swimming style.
At 4-5 inches, this young Arowana is still in its early growth stages, but it will eventually grow to an impressive size, potentially reaching up to 3 feet in length as an adult. The Silver Arowana is a surface-dwelling predator, with a distinctive upward-facing mouth that allows it to snatch prey from the water's surface. It's important to ensure the tank is securely covered, as Silver Arowanas are known for their ability to jump, sometimes leaping out of the water to catch insects in the wild.
A tank for a Silver Arowana of this size should be spacious, with a minimum of 150 gallons recommended to accommodate its rapid growth. The aquarium should have plenty of open swimming space, with minimal decorations that could restrict its movement. Some driftwood and sturdy plants can be added for aesthetics and to provide some cover, but the focus should be on open water.
In terms of diet, the Silver Arowana is carnivorous and should be fed a varied diet that includes live or frozen foods such as fish, shrimp, and insects. Regular feeding with high-protein foods will support its growth and health.
The Silver Arowana at this stage is a fascinating addition to a well-maintained aquarium, but it requires a dedicated aquarist who can provide the care and space it needs to thrive as it matures.
