Description
The Discus Royal Red Ruby (8-9 cm) is a premium and visually striking variety of Discus fish, admired for its rich red coloration and classic round, flat body shape. Known for its deep ruby-red hue, this fish brings an element of elegance and sophistication to any aquarium. As it matures, the Royal Red Ruby's color becomes more intense, making it a true centerpiece in a well-maintained tank.
Size: At 8-9 cm, this Royal Red Ruby Discus is in the early juvenile stage but can grow up to 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) as an adult.
Color: The fish showcases a luxurious, deep ruby-red coloration that covers most of its body. The intensity of the red varies, with some individuals having a darker or slightly gradient effect. The vibrant red color is uniform, making the Royal Red Ruby stand out among other fish in the aquarium.
Shape: Like all Discus, it has a round, disc-like body, with long, flowing dorsal and anal fins. The high body structure adds to its elegant swimming motion, making it a majestic presence in the tank.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 227 litres is ideal for a single Royal Red Ruby Discus. If kept in groups, as Discus prefer, the tank size should increase accordingly. Discus thrive best in schools of five or more.
Temperature: This species prefers warmer waters, with an optimal range of 28°C to 30°C (82°F to 86°F).
pH: The ideal pH range is slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.0 and 7.0.
Water Hardness: Soft water is preferred, with a hardness level of 1-8 dGH.
Filtration: A strong filtration system is crucial, as Discus are sensitive to water quality. Weekly water changes of 25-30% help maintain clean water conditions.
Aquascaping: Royal Red Ruby Discus appreciate a planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, driftwood, and rocks. A natural setup mimicking their native Amazon River habitat with live plants and subdued lighting can reduce stress and promote natural behaviors. However, ensure that there are open spaces for free swimming.
Lighting: Moderate lighting works best for these fish, highlighting their deep ruby color without overwhelming them.
Social Nature: Royal Red Ruby Discus are peaceful and enjoy being in groups. Keeping them in a school reduces stress and encourages social interaction, helping them thrive.
Tankmates: Ideal tankmates include other peaceful species such as tetras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and small plecos. Avoid aggressive or fast-moving fish that may intimidate or outcompete the Discus for food.
Feeding: This Discus is omnivorous and requires a varied diet to maintain its vibrant color and health. High-quality Discus-specific pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, are ideal. Feeding small amounts 2-3 times per day is recommended.
