Description
The Kribensis Rainbow (Pelvicachromis pulcher), commonly known as the Rainbow Krib or simply Kribensis, is a small, colorful cichlid species popular among aquarists for its striking appearance and relatively peaceful nature. Native to the rivers and streams of West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon, this fish is known for its vibrant body colors, including a pearlescent purple belly, yellow and green highlights, and dark lateral stripes. During breeding, the colors become even more intense, especially in females, who develop a deep red or violet belly.
Kribensis Rainbow cichlids grow to about 3-4 inches in length and are well-suited to community tanks, provided their tankmates are non-aggressive and similarly sized. They thrive in a 20-gallon or larger aquarium with stable water conditions. The ideal water parameters are a pH range of 6.0-7.5, temperatures between 75-80°F (24-27°C), and slightly soft to moderately hard water. They enjoy a planted tank with plenty of caves or hiding spots, as they can be territorial, especially when breeding.
This species is omnivorous and requires a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Kribensis Rainbows are substrate spawners and display fascinating parental care, with both the male and female guarding and caring for their fry.
Their vibrant colors, manageable size, and unique breeding behavior make them a favorite among beginner and experienced aquarists alike. With proper care, these beautiful fish can live for 5-8 years.
