The Freshwater Mudskipper (size 1.5 inches) is a fascinating and highly unique amphibious fish known for its ability to thrive both in water and on land. Belonging to the family Gobiidae, these fish are typically found in brackish water environments such as mangroves, estuaries, and mudflats, but they can also adapt to freshwater conditions with the right care.

Appearance: At 6 to 7 inches in length, the Freshwater Mudskipper has a robust, elongated body with a broad head and prominent, protruding eyes on the top, giving it a distinct appearance. Its coloration can vary from brownish-gray to greenish-blue, often with mottled spots or patterns along its body that help it blend into its muddy surroundings. The pectoral fins are large and muscular, adapted for "walking" on land, while the dorsal fins are spiny and can be raised or lowered, adding to its expressive look.

Unique Adaptations: What makes the Mudskipper stand out is its amphibious lifestyle. This fish can not only swim like other fish but also use its strong pectoral fins to walk or even leap on land. It breathes both through gills and by absorbing oxygen through its moist skin, allowing it to survive out of water for extended periods, provided it stays damp. This remarkable ability enables the Mudskipper to explore land for food and territory, making it one of the few truly amphibious fish.

Behavior and Habitat: Freshwater Mudskippers are territorial and tend to stake out specific areas in their environment, often defending them from other Mudskippers. In the wild, they dig burrows in mudflats, where they seek refuge during high tide or harsh conditions. They are highly active and interactive fish, often seen "hopping" from place to place or perching on rocks and other elevated surfaces.

Aquarium Setup: A specialized brackish or freshwater aquarium is required, typically with a land section or sloping substrate to allow the Mudskipper to move in and out of the water easily. A 250 litres tank or larger is recommended for a single adult Mudskipper of this size.

Substrate: Mudskippers prefer soft, muddy, or sandy substrates that mimic their natural environment. They often dig into the substrate, so providing a thick layer of mud or fine sand is ideal.

Water Conditions: Although adaptable to freshwater, the ideal setup is slightly brackish with a salinity level between 1.005 and 1.015. The water temperature should range between 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C), with a pH of 7.0 to 8.5.
