Description
The Peacock Bass Mono (3-4 cm) is a small yet striking juvenile freshwater fish, belonging to the cichlid family. At this young stage, the fish displays vibrant colors that hint at the brilliant patterns it will develop as it matures. Typically, Peacock Bass are known for their striking combination of green, yellow, and orange hues, accented with distinctive dark vertical bars and eye spots (ocelli) on the tail fin, which help deter predators.
Despite its small size, the Peacock Bass Mono is already active and displays the predatory instincts that are characteristic of this species. As it grows, it can reach substantial sizes, often exceeding 24 inches in adulthood. Therefore, even at this early stage, it's important to prepare for the fish’s future needs, including a large, spacious tank.
A minimum tank size of 454 litres is recommended for a juvenile Peacock Bass, but as it grows, a tank of 1136 litres or more will be necessary. The aquarium should provide plenty of open swimming space, with a few sturdy hiding spots made from rocks or driftwood. A strong filtration system is essential, as these fish produce a significant amount of waste and require clean, well-oxygenated water.
The Peacock Bass Mono prefers water conditions with a temperature range of 75-82°F, a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. As a carnivorous species, its diet should consist of high-quality carnivore pellets, live or frozen foods like shrimp, small fish, and insects, ensuring proper growth and vibrant coloration.
While Peacock Bass are generally peaceful, they are predatory and may view smaller tank mates as food, so it's important to house them with similarly sized or larger, robust fish. Regular water changes and close monitoring of water parameters are crucial to keeping the Peacock Bass Mono healthy and allowing it to grow into its full, majestic form.
