Description

The Geophagus Surinamensis (5-6 Inches), also known as the Surinam Geophagus, is a striking and visually captivating cichlid species from the rivers and floodplains of Suriname in South America. At this size, the fish is nearing its adult stage, displaying more pronounced characteristics and colors.

Appearance: At 5-6 inches, the Geophagus Surinamensis is well-developed, showcasing its distinctive features. It has a robust, elongated body with a slightly rounded, disk-like shape. The coloration is typically a blend of greenish-yellow to silver, with prominent horizontal stripes or spots that enhance its striking appearance. The head and gill covers often show reddish or orange tones, adding to its beauty. Mature individuals can grow up to 8 inches, and their colors become even more vivid with age.

Behavior: This species is known for its unique substrate-sifting behavior. Geophagus Surinamensis spend a significant amount of time at the bottom of the tank, using their specialized mouths to sift through the sand or gravel in search of food. This natural behavior helps to keep the substrate clean but requires a soft, sandy substrate to prevent injury to their gills.

Tank Size: A minimum of 340 litres is recommended to accommodate their size and active behavior.

Substrate: Use soft, sandy substrate to allow them to engage in their natural substrate-sifting behavior without causing harm.

Decor: Include rocks, driftwood, and hardy plants to create hiding spots and replicate their natural habitat. Avoid delicate plants, as they may be uprooted or damaged.

Water Conditions: Maintain slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5-7.5) with good filtration and regular water changes to ensure high water quality.

Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should be a staple in their diet.

Live/Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide additional protein and nutrients.
