Product Description:
Eleocharis acicularis, commonly known as dwarf hairgrass or spikerush, is distributed almost globally. It can be found on the edges of ponds and in shallow water in Central Europe, too. It has been known as aquarium plant for a very long time and is also on sale as pond plant quite regularly.
The hairlike, thin and rather upright leaves of the submersed form are of a medium green and grow to a length of about 10 to 20 cm.
Eleocharis pusilla (often sold under the name "E. parvula") is quite similar to E. acicularis, but its submersed form stays smaller (grows only 5 cm high) and is of a light green colour under the same conditions, and its leaves are bent.
Lighting: Eleocharis vivipara thrives in moderate to high lighting conditions. Providing ample light is crucial for promoting upright growth and maintaining a vibrant green color.
Substrate: While this species is adaptable to various substrates, a nutrient-rich substrate can contribute to its overall health and growth. Ensure that the substrate allows for the establishment of runners.
CO2 and Nutrients: Tall Hairgrass can adapt to low CO2 levels, but supplementing with a low to medium CO2 injection can enhance its growth. Regular fertilization with a balanced liquid fertilizer supports its nutrient requirements.
Pruning: Unlike shorter hairgrass varieties, Eleocharis vivipara benefits from occasional trimming to maintain a tidy appearance. Trim the tops of the blades as needed.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature range of 68-82°F (20-28°C), a slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH between 6.0-7.5, and moderate water hardness.
