Description
The Red Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) is a vibrantly colored freshwater fish native to the tributaries and rivers of South America, particularly in areas with slow-moving, clear water rich in vegetation . They are a popular choice for aquariums due to their peaceful temperament, small size, and attractive appearance.
Appearance: The Red Phantom Tetra is named for its vibrant red to reddish-orange body, which gives it a phantom-like, glowing appearance in the water. The intensity of the red coloration can vary, with males typically exhibiting more vivid hues compared to females. The fins of the Red Phantom Tetra are semi-transparent with a hint of red, and the dorsal fin often features a distinctive black spot, adding to the fish's allure. The body shape is typical of tetras, with a slightly elongated and laterally compressed form.
Behavior: This species is peaceful and social, thriving in groups of at least six or more. Red Phantom Tetras are schooling fish, and they display their best colors and behaviors when kept in groups. They are relatively active swimmers but tend to stay in the middle to upper regions of the aquarium. Their calm demeanor makes them an excellent choice for community tanks, where they coexist harmoniously with other small, non-aggressive fish.
Habitat and Tank Requirements: Red Phantom Tetras do well in aquariums that mimic their natural habitat, which includes densely planted areas with subdued lighting and plenty of hiding spots. A tank of at least 15 to 20 gallons is recommended to provide sufficient space for a small school. The ideal water conditions include a temperature range of 72°F to 80°F (22°C to 27°C), a pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. These tetras appreciate the presence of driftwood and leaf litter in the tank, which can help replicate the tannin-stained waters of their native environment.
Diet: As omnivores, Red Phantom Tetras have a varied diet. They will readily accept high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Providing a diverse diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.
Compatibility: Red Phantom Tetras are excellent community fish and can be housed with other small, peaceful species such as other tetras, rasboras, and peaceful bottom dwellers like Corydoras catfish. They are also compatible with small shrimp and other non-aggressive invertebrates. Their calm and non-territorial nature makes them ideal for aquariums with a mix of species.
Lifespan: With proper care, Red Phantom Tetras can live for 5 to 6 years, although some individuals may live longer under optimal conditions. Regular water changes, stable water parameters, and a balanced diet are essential for their longevity.
