Description
The Tire Track Eel (4-5 Inches) is a unique and intriguing freshwater fish known for its elongated, snake-like body and distinctive, maze-like patterns that resemble tire tracks, hence its name. This species is native to Southeast Asia, where it is commonly found in slow-moving rivers, streams, and flooded areas. At this size, the Tire Track Eel is still relatively young and will continue to grow, potentially reaching up to 30 inches in length under optimal conditions.
Tire Track Eels are nocturnal and prefer to stay hidden during the day, so it's essential to provide plenty of hiding spots in the aquarium, such as caves, driftwood, and dense plant cover. They are known for their burrowing behavior, often digging into the substrate, so a soft, sandy bottom is ideal to prevent injury.
In terms of temperament, Tire Track Eels are generally peaceful but can be shy and reclusive. They should be housed with non-aggressive tank mates that won't outcompete them for food. These eels are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish.
Due to their potential size and specific care needs, Tire Track Eels are best suited for experienced aquarists with a spacious aquarium, typically250 litres or larger, to accommodate their growth and activity. With proper care, they make an exceptional and visually striking addition to a freshwater aquarium.
