Description
The Paroon Shark (2-3 Inches) is a small yet energetic juvenile freshwater fish, recognized for its sleek, streamlined body and distinct silver-gray coloration. Despite being called a "shark," this species is actually a type of catfish, known scientifically as Pangasius sanitwongsei. At this young stage, the Paroon Shark already exhibits the fast-swimming and active behavior that it is known for, darting around the aquarium with agility.
Although it is small now, the Paroon Shark has the potential to grow exceptionally large, reaching lengths of up to 3-4 feet in adulthood. This makes it important to plan ahead, as a large, spacious tank will eventually be needed. However, while it is small, a smaller, well-maintained tank can suffice temporarily.
The aquarium should have plenty of open swimming space with a soft substrate and minimal sharp decorations, as this fish is prone to injury due to its fast movements. It’s also essential to provide a strong filtration system, as Paroon Sharks are messy eaters and produce a significant amount of waste.
Water conditions should be carefully monitored, with a temperature range of 72-79°F, a pH of 6.5-7.5, and moderately soft to slightly hard water. The Paroon Shark is an omnivore, so its diet should include a mix of high-quality sinking pellets, live or frozen foods, and plant matter to ensure balanced nutrition and healthy growth.
Due to their potential size and active nature, Paroon Sharks are best kept in species-only tanks or with other large, non-aggressive fish. They can be somewhat shy and may take some time to acclimate to new environments, but with proper care, they will grow into impressive and fascinating aquarium inhabitants.
