Description
The Western Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia australis) is a captivating freshwater species native to the streams and rivers of Western Australia. Known for their vibrant, shimmering colors, these fish are popular among aquarium enthusiasts for their hardy nature and striking appearance.
Mature males display intense hues of iridescent blue, green, and sometimes golden-yellow, especially when viewed under proper lighting. Their colors become even more vibrant during mating displays or when they are excited. Females, though slightly less colorful, still exhibit a soft, silvery sheen with hints of pale blue or green. The fins are often outlined with a bright red or orange trim, adding to their overall beauty.
Growing up to 4 inches in length, Western Rainbowfish are peaceful and active swimmers, making them excellent choices for community tanks. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of swimming space, as they are schooling fish and prefer to be kept in groups of six or more. These fish are adaptable to a range of water conditions but prefer temperatures between 72°F and 82°F and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7.0–8.0).
In the wild, their diet consists of insects, small crustaceans, and plant matter, but in captivity, they readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
Western Rainbowfish are prized for their stunning colors, peaceful temperament, and ease of care, making them a great addition to both beginner and advanced aquariums. Their energetic swimming and harmonious presence also add a lively dynamic to any freshwater setup.
