The Discus Red Checkerboard (7-8 cm) is a stunning juvenile freshwater fish known for its unique and striking color pattern.  Size: At 3-4 cm, this Discus is still in its juvenile stage and will grow to its full adult size, typically reaching 15-20 cm (6-8 inches).

Color and Pattern: The Red Checkerboard Discus features a base coloration of white or light cream, with bright red markings that form a distinctive checkerboard pattern across the body and fins. The red coloration is more prominent in younger fish, and as the fish matures, the pattern will become even more intricate and vibrant.

Shape: Like all Discus fish, the Red Checkerboard has a round, flat body and flowing fins that give it a graceful appearance as it swims.

Tank Size: A minimum of 227 to 340 litres is recommended for a group of Discus fish. Discus are social and do best in groups of five or more, which helps to reduce stress and promote natural behavior.

Temperature: Optimal water temperature is between 28°C to 30°C (82°F to 86°F) to mimic their natural warm-water habitat.

pH: Slightly acidic to neutral water is ideal, with a pH range of 6.0-7.0.

Water Hardness: Soft water with a hardness level of 1-8 dGH is preferred, as Discus are sensitive to high mineral content.

Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential to maintain clean, stable water conditions. Regular water changes (around 25-30% weekly) are important for Discus health.

Aquascaping: A planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas is ideal for the Red Checkerboard Discus. Include elements like driftwood, rocks, and broad-leaved plants such as Amazon Swords. These fish prefer a peaceful environment with dim to moderate lighting.

Social Nature: The Red Checkerboard Discus is a peaceful, social fish that thrives in a community with its own species or other non-aggressive tankmates. Keeping them in a group of five or more helps them feel secure and reduces stress.

Tankmates: Suitable tankmates include peaceful species like tetras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid aggressive or fast-swimming fish, as Discus can become stressed in high-energy environments.

Feeding: Discus are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Juvenile Discus, like this 3-4 cm specimen, should be fed 2-3 times daily to support growth.
