Description
Otocinclus Catfish, also known as Otos or Dwarf Suckermouth Catfish, are small, peaceful fish that make excellent additions to planted aquariums. They are renowned for their algae-eating abilities, helping to keep tanks clean and free of unwanted algae growth
Size: Otos typically reach a maximum size of 2 inches (5 cm), making them suitable for both nano and larger aquariums.
Appearance: These fish have a slender, torpedo-shaped body with a light brown coloration and darker stripes or spots. They possess a small mouth equipped with tiny teeth that they use to scrape algae off surfaces.
Behavior: Otos are peaceful and shy fish that prefer to live in groups of 5 or more. They spend most of their time exploring the aquarium, grazing on algae and biofilm.
Diet: Otos are primarily herbivores, feeding on soft algae, diatoms, and biofilm that grows on plants, glass, and decor. They require a diet rich in algae or algae-based foods.
Tank Setup: Otos thrive in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of hiding places and a moderate water flow. They prefer slightly acidic water with a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C).
Compatibility: Otos are peaceful and compatible with most community fish, including small peaceful species like shrimp and tetras. They should not be kept with aggressive or predatory fish
Algae Source: To ensure a healthy diet, it's important to provide Otos with a sufficient source of algae. This can be achieved by maintaining a moderately planted aquarium with some algae growth or by supplementing their diet with algae wafers or fresh vegetables.
Water Quality: Otos are sensitive to poor water quality, so it's crucial to maintain clean and stable water parameters. Regular water changes and proper filtration are essential.
