Description
The Northern Africa Lake White Spotted Duboisi Cichlid (Cyphotilapia frontosa), often simply known as the White Spotted Duboisi Cichlid, is an attractive and intriguing freshwater fish from Lake Tanganyika in Africa. With its distinctive coloration and robust nature, it makes a striking addition to a well-planned aquarium.
Appearance:
The White Spotted Duboisi Cichlid is notable for its unique and eye-catching appearance. At 1.5-2 inches in length, this cichlid is still in its juvenile stage, but it already displays the features that make it stand out. Its body is typically a deep blue or dark gray, adorned with distinctive white or pale spots that create a striking contrast. These spots are usually distributed along the body and fins, giving the fish a beautiful and ornamental appearance. As the cichlid matures, its coloration and spot pattern may become even more pronounced, enhancing its visual appeal.
Behavior and Temperament:
This species is known for its semi-aggressive and territorial behavior. While juvenile White Spotted Duboisi Cichlids can be relatively peaceful, they often become more assertive and territorial as they grow. They prefer to establish their own territory within the tank and can be aggressive towards other fish, especially as they mature. Providing plenty of hiding spots and territories, such as rock formations and caves, will help reduce stress and aggression. These cichlids are best kept with other cichlid species or robust fish that can tolerate their assertive nature.
Habitat Requirements:
The White Spotted Duboisi Cichlid thrives in an aquarium that replicates the rocky, mountainous environment of Lake Tanganyika. A tank of at least 136 litres is recommended to provide ample space and territories for these fish. The water should be maintained at a temperature range of 76-82°F (24-28°C) with a pH level between 7.5 and 9.0. A sandy or rocky substrate is ideal, along with plenty of rockwork and caves to create hiding spots and territories. Good water quality is essential, so regular water changes and filtration are necessary.
Diet:
As a carnivorous species, the White Spotted Duboisi Cichlid requires a diet high in protein. In captivity, it will thrive on high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. Providing a varied diet will support healthy growth and vibrant coloration. Feed the cichlid small amounts several times a day to avoid overfeeding and to maintain water quality.
Care and Compatibility:
Due to its semi-aggressive and territorial nature, the White Spotted Duboisi Cichlid is best kept with other cichlids or larger, robust fish that can handle its assertiveness. It is not suitable for tanks with smaller or more passive species. Ensuring a well-maintained tank with plenty of hiding spots and monitoring water parameters will help keep this cichlid healthy and stress-free.
