The Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox), also known as the Dwarf Rainbowfish, is a small yet vividly colored freshwater species admired for its iridescent beauty. Males exhibit a shimmering neon blue body, which contrasts with bright red or orange fins, while females have more subdued tones but are still quite striking. These fish typically reach about 2.5 to 3 inches in length, making them a fantastic choice for mid-sized aquariums.
Neon Rainbowfish are peaceful and energetic swimmers, thriving in groups of six or more. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is recommended, with stable water temperatures of 72-77°F (22-25°C) and a pH range of 6.5-7.5. They appreciate a well-planted environment with plenty of open space to swim, and soft to moderately hard water.
These omnivorous fish require a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Known for their peaceful nature, Neon Rainbowfish are excellent community tank members, coexisting well with other non-aggressive species.
With their radiant colors, active behavior, and social demeanor, Neon Rainbowfish are both captivating and easy to care for, making them a popular choice among aquarists. When properly maintained, they can live for up to 5 years.
