Description
A micro worm starter culture is an essential tool for aquarists who raise fish fry, as micro worms are an excellent first food due to their small size and ease of cultivation. Micro worms are nematodes that are easy to grow and provide essential nutrients to young fish.
Setting Up a Micro Worm Culture:
- Container: Use a shallow plastic container or any similar container with a lid. Ensure the lid is not airtight; poke small holes to allow airflow.
- Medium: Prepare a moist substrate like oatmeal, mashed potatoes, or bread soaked in water. The medium should be damp but not watery.
- Adding the Starter Culture: Spread the micro worm starter culture over the prepared medium.
- Maintenance: Place the container in a warm location, ideally between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
- Harvesting: After a few days, you will see micro worms crawling up the sides of the container. Use a small brush or your finger to scrape them off for feeding.
- Feeding to Fry: Collect the worms and rinse them if desired before adding them to the fish tank.
Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Culture:
- Avoid Mold: Ensure the culture is not too wet to prevent mold growth.
- Refresh Medium: Every few weeks, start a new culture to keep a fresh supply and avoid die-off.
- Smell Management: Micro worm cultures can have a mild odor, so it’s best to keep them in a ventilated space.
