Description
The Hockey Stick Tetra, also called the Penguin Tetra, is a peaceful, schooling fish named for the distinct black stripe running along its body, giving it the appearance of a hockey stick. Native to slow-moving rivers in the Amazon Basin, it is well-suited for planted aquariums due to its preference for soft, acidic water and dim lighting.
Size: Reaches about 2.5 to 3 inches (6–7 cm) in adulthood.
Coloration: The body is mostly silver or translucent with a metallic sheen, featuring a distinctive black stripe that starts behind the eye and curves downward toward the tail.
Body Shape: Slender and streamlined, perfectly suited for fast swimming.
Native Habitat: Found naturally in the slow-moving streams and rivers of the Amazon Basin in Peru and Brazil. These waters are shaded, with plant cover and soft substrates.
Ideal Tank Size: A 90 litres tank or larger is recommended, especially if keeping a school of 6 or more.
Social Behavior: The Hockey Stick Fish is peaceful and thrives in groups. Keeping them in schools of 6 or more helps reduce stress and encourages their natural synchronized swimming behavior.
Activity Level: Active swimmers that occupy the mid to upper water levels of the tank.
Tank Mates: Compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish such as tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and small catfish species. Avoid larger or aggressive fish that might intimidate them.
