Description

The Geophagus Surinamensis (5-6 cm), also known as the Surinam Geophagus, is a fascinating and visually striking freshwater cichlid. Native to the rivers and floodplains of Suriname and the surrounding regions in South America, this species is prized for its vibrant coloration and interesting behavior.

Geophagus Surinamensis are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish. However, they may exhibit some territorial behavior, especially during breeding. It’s best to house them with other medium-sized, non-aggressive species and provide ample space and hiding spots to reduce stress and aggression.

Appearance: At 5-6 cm, the Geophagus Surinamensis is a juvenile, displaying the beginning of its characteristic features. As it grows, it will develop a more robust and elongated body with a slightly rounded, disc-like shape. The coloration of this species typically includes a mix of greenish-yellow to silver hues, with prominent horizontal stripes or spots that provide a striking appearance. The head and gill covers may show a reddish or orange tinge, adding to its visual appeal. Mature individuals can reach up to 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) and will display even more vivid colors and patterns.

Behavior: Geophagus Surinamensis are known for their substrate-sifting behavior. They spend much of their time at the bottom of the tank, sifting through sand and gravel in search of food. This behavior is natural and helps keep the substrate clean. Providing a soft, sandy substrate is essential to allow them to engage in this activity without causing damage to their gills.

Size: A minimum of 250 litres is recommended to accommodate their growth and active behavior.

Substrate: Soft, sandy substrate is ideal to support their substrate-sifting habits.

Decor: Include rocks, driftwood, and sturdy plants to create hiding spots and mimic their natural environment. Avoid delicate plants, as they may be uprooted or damaged.

Water Conditions: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with good filtration. Regular water changes are important to maintain water quality.

Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets form the staple of their diet.

Live/Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide additional nutrients.
