Description
The Bottom Dweller Clown Loach (Botia macracanthus) is a popular freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and playful personality. At a size of 2.5-3.5 inches, this juvenile Clown Loach is still in its growing phase but already showcases the striking features that make it a favorite among aquarists.
Coloration: The Clown Loach is easily recognized by its bright orange-yellow body adorned with three bold, black vertical bands. These bands run across the body, with one passing through the eye, giving the fish a striking contrast. The fins are often tinged with red or orange.
Size: At 2.5-3.5 inches, this Clown Loach is still relatively small but will eventually grow to 8-12 inches in a well-maintained aquarium.
Body Shape: The body is elongated with a slightly arched back and a rounded belly. The Clown Loach has small, downward-facing mouths equipped with barbels, which it uses to search for food at the bottom of the tank.
Temperament: Clown Loaches are social and peaceful, often displaying playful behavior, especially in groups. They are best kept in schools of at least 5-6 to ensure they feel secure and exhibit their natural behaviors.
Activity: As bottom dwellers, Clown Loaches spend most of their time near the substrate, scavenging for food and exploring crevices. They are known for their quirky habits, like lying on their sides, which might appear as if they are sick but is normal behavior.
Compatibility: Clown Loaches are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other community fish. However, due to their size and activity level, they are best paired with similarly sized or slightly larger tank mates.
Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended, as Clown Loaches are active swimmers and grow significantly over time. A larger tank will be needed as they mature.
Water Conditions: They prefer warm water temperatures between 75-86°F (24-30°C) with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. The water should be well-oxygenated, with a gentle to moderate flow.
Substrate and Decor: A soft substrate, like sand or smooth gravel, is ideal to prevent injury to their sensitive barbels. Providing hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, and plants will mimic their natural environment and help them feel secure.
Feeding: Clown Loaches are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet. They thrive on a mix of high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. They are also known for eating small snails, making them useful for controlling snail populations in a tank.
