Description
Moina starter culture refers to a live culture of Moina, which are small freshwater crustaceans often used as live food for aquarium fish. They are similar to Daphnia but typically smaller, and they provide a rich source of protein and nutrients. Moina are particularly beneficial for feeding fry (baby fish) and small fish due to their size and nutritional content.
Setting Up a Moina Culture:
- Container: Use a container like a plastic tub, aquarium, or bucket.
- Water Quality: Use dechlorinated water. Moina thrive in water with moderate hardness and a neutral pH.
- Temperature: Keep the water temperature between 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F).
- Light: Provide indirect sunlight or artificial light for about 12-16 hours a day.
- Aeration: Gentle aeration is recommended to keep the water oxygenated.
- Feeding: Feed the Moina yeast, green water (algae), or powdered spirulina. Avoid overfeeding to prevent water quality issues.
- Harvesting: Harvest the Moina using a fine mesh net when the population increases, ensuring not to overharvest and deplete the colony.
