Description
The Malawi Haps Cichlid Zebra Obliquidens, also known as the Sunset Hap, is a colorful and vibrant cichlid species originating from Lake Malawi in Africa. These fish are prized for their stunning coloration, which combines radiant yellows, oranges, and sometimes reds, resembling the colors of a sunset, hence the name. This particular specimen, at 2 to 2.5 inches, is still in its juvenile stage but will grow into a larger, more impressive fish as it matures.
Size: The Sunset Hap grows to a medium size, reaching up to 6-8 inches when fully grown. At the juvenile size of 2 to 2.5 inches, the fish is still developing its full color spectrum.
Coloration: Juvenile Zebra Obliquidens Haps may not exhibit their full adult colors yet but will display hints of their future vibrant appearance. As they grow, males tend to show brilliant hues of yellow, orange, and sometimes red, with metallic highlights, particularly around the face and fins. Females are usually more subdued in color, often appearing silvery or pale.
Body Shape: The Malawi Haps Cichlid has a streamlined, elongated body that allows it to swim gracefully and quickly through the water. The dorsal fin is long and runs along the length of the body, and the tail fin is slightly forked, contributing to its fast-swimming nature.
Fins: The fins are usually transparent or slightly tinted, with males often displaying a metallic sheen along the edges. As the fish matures, the fins will become more pronounced and colorful.
Temperament: Malawi Haps are semi-aggressive fish. Males, in particular, can become territorial, especially when breeding. It’s best to keep them in tanks with other robust cichlids or similarly sized species that can handle their assertive behavior. They are less aggressive than Mbuna cichlids but still require a careful selection of tank mates.
Social Structure: In a community setting, it's recommended to keep one male with several females to reduce aggression. Males may exhibit dominance and territorial behavior toward other males of the same species.
Activity Level: Sunset Haps are active swimmers and need plenty of space to explore. They are often seen swimming at the middle to upper levels of the tank, and they require an open area to move freely.
Tank Size: A minimum of250 litres is recommended for a single Sunset Hap, though a larger tank of 340 litres or more is preferable, especially if you plan to keep multiple fish. The larger the tank, the better, as it will help reduce aggression by providing plenty of space.
Filtration and Aeration: Malawi Haps require clean and well-oxygenated water. A high-quality filtration system is essential, along with regular water changes to maintain optimal conditions.
Décor: Mimicking their natural habitat in Lake Malawi, the tank should have plenty of rocks, caves, and hiding spots, as this helps reduce stress and aggression. They do not require plants, and if plants are present, they should be hardy species that can withstand potential digging and uprooting by the fish.
