Description
A vinegar eel starter culture is perfect for raising tiny nematodes called Turbatrix aceti, which make excellent live food for fish fry due to their small size and ease of cultivation. Vinegar eels are resilient and require minimal effort to maintain.
Setting Up a Vinegar Eel Culture:
- Container: Use a clear glass or plastic jar with a lid. Punch small holes in the lid or use a breathable cover to ensure airflow.
- Vinegar Solution: Mix a 50/50 solution of apple cider vinegar and dechlorinated water. Some people prefer using 100% vinegar for more concentrated growth, but diluting with water makes the culture more manageable.
- Starter Culture: Add the vinegar eel starter culture to the solution.
- Feeding: Add small slices of peeled apple to the culture as a food source. This helps promote growth and sustains the eels.
- Temperature: Keep the culture at room temperature, ideally between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
- Harvesting: To collect the eels, insert a cotton ball or piece of sponge into a narrow neck bottle or test tube with some vinegar eel solution. Fill the top with fresh water, and wait a few hours. The eels will migrate into the freshwater, making them easy to siphon or pour off for feeding.
