Description

The Bottom Dweller Clown Loach (Botia macracanthus), measuring 5-6 cm, is a juvenile freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and active behavior. Though still small, it already displays the distinctive features that make it a favorite among aquarists.

Coloration: This Clown Loach has a bright orange-yellow body with three prominent black vertical bands. One band runs through the eye, the second at mid-body, and the third near the tail. These contrasting colors make the Clown Loach visually striking even at this young age.

Size: At 5-6 cm, the Clown Loach is still growing, eventually reaching up to 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) in a well-maintained aquarium.

Body Shape: The Clown Loach has an elongated body with a slightly arched back and a rounded belly. It has small, downward-facing mouths equipped with barbels, which it uses to forage for food at the bottom of the tank.

Temperament: Clown Loaches are social and peaceful, preferring to live in groups of at least 5-6. They are playful and active, often engaging in quirky behaviors like resting on their sides, which is normal and not a sign of illness.

Activity: As bottom dwellers, these loaches spend much of their time near the substrate, searching for food and exploring their environment. Their playful nature makes them entertaining to watch.

Compatibility: Clown Loaches are generally peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive fish. They are best kept with tank mates that are similarly sized or larger.

Water Conditions: Clown Loaches prefer warm water temperatures between 75-86°F (24-30°C) with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. The water should be well-oxygenated, with a gentle to moderate flow.

Substrate and Decor: A soft substrate, like sand or smooth gravel, is ideal for protecting their sensitive barbels. Providing plenty of hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, and plants will help them feel secure and mimic their natural habitat.

Feeding: Clown Loaches are omnivores and enjoy a varied diet. They thrive on a mix of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. They also eat small snails, which can help control snail populations in your aquarium.
