Description
The Neon Tetra is a classic and beloved freshwater fish that has long been a favorite among aquarists for its vibrant colors and peaceful demeanor. Semi-adult Neon Tetras, typically around 0.75 to 1 inch in length, are perfect for planted tanks where they can display their full spectrum of colors and natural behaviors.
The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is renowned for its stunning appearance. Its body features a bright, iridescent blue stripe that runs from the nose to the base of the tail, paired with a bold red stripe that extends from the middle of the body to the tail. This striking combination of colors creates a mesmerizing effect, especially when the fish is swimming among the green foliage of a planted aquarium.
In a planted tank, a single Neon Tetra can still be an eye-catching addition, although they are typically known to thrive best in groups. The dense plant cover and gentle water flow in planted tanks mimic their natural habitat, providing a sense of security and encouraging natural behavior. The soft, slightly acidic water typical of such environments (with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0 and a temperature range of 70 to 81°F or 21 to 27°C) is ideal for this species. The dimmer lighting often used in planted tanks also enhances the neon glow of the fish, making them stand out even more.
While Neon Tetras are social fish that prefer to be in schools, a single semi-adult Neon Tetra can still thrive if the tank is well-maintained with plenty of hiding spots among plants. The tranquil surroundings of a planted tank will help reduce stress and allow the fish to exhibit its natural beauty and behavior.
They are omnivores with a preference for small, high-quality foods. They will readily accept flake foods, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A varied diet will help maintain their vibrant colors and promote overall health.
