Description
The Green Neon Tetra is a stunning and vibrant freshwater fish that brings a lively burst of color to any planted aquarium. Known for its striking appearance, this small yet captivating fish features an iridescent green stripe running horizontally along its body, which is complemented by a bright blue lower half and a vivid red stripe near the tail. The combination of these colors creates a dazzling effect, especially when the fish is swimming among lush green plants.
Native to the clear, slow-moving waters of South America, the Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is closely related to the more common Neon Tetra but is distinguished by its slightly smaller size and more intense green coloration. Typically reaching about 1 inch in length, this fish is perfect for nano or small community tanks, where its vibrant colors stand out beautifully.
The Green Neon Tetra thrives in planted tanks, where it feels most at home. The dense vegetation not only mimics its natural habitat but also provides shelter and security, which is essential for its well-being. The soft, slightly acidic water typical of planted tanks (with a pH range of 5.0 to 7.0 and a temperature range of 72 to 79°F or 22 to 26°C) is ideal for this species. The dim lighting often used in planted tanks enhances the neon glow of the fish, making it a dazzling focal point.
Although typically kept in schools, a single Green Neon Tetra can still thrive if given the right environment. However, it is essential to provide plenty of hiding spots and a calm environment to reduce stress. This fish is peaceful by nature, making it an excellent companion for other small, non-aggressive species.
Feeding the Green Neon Tetra is simple, as it is an omnivore. It readily accepts a variety of foods, including high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro-worms. A varied diet will help maintain the fish's vibrant colors and overall health.
