Description
The Discus Red Melon (5-6 cm) is a young freshwater fish known for its striking bright red coloration and classic Discus shape. Although small in size at this stage, it exhibits the early signs of its future vibrant hue, making it a highly desirable fish for aquarists looking to raise a visually stunning species in their aquariums. The Red Melon Discus is a peaceful, social fish, perfect for community tanks, especially with other peaceful species.
Size: At 5-6 cm, this Discus is in its juvenile stage, but it can grow to a full adult size of 15-20 cm (6-8 inches).
Color: The Red Melon Discus showcases a developing deep red body, with some fish displaying slight variations in orange or lighter red tones as they mature. Its vivid color will intensify with proper care, nutrition, and as it ages. This variety often has minimal markings or patterns, giving it a uniform, striking appearance.
Shape: Like all Discus, the Red Melon has a round, flat, disc-like body. Its long, flowing fins add to its graceful swimming motion, making it an attractive feature in aquariums.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 227 litres is recommended to house Red Melon Discus, especially if kept in groups. Discus are social fish that thrive best in schools of five or more.
Temperature: Red Melon Discus prefer warmer water, with an ideal range of 28°C to 30°C (82°F to 86°F).
pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0-7.0 is ideal.
Water Hardness: Soft water with a hardness level between 1-8 dGH is recommended to keep them comfortable.
Filtration: A strong filtration system is crucial for Discus fish, as they are sensitive to water quality. Regular water changes (25-30% weekly) help maintain optimal conditions.
Aquascaping: Red Melon Discus enjoy well-decorated tanks with live plants, driftwood, and rocks to provide hiding spots. However, the tank should also have plenty of open space for free swimming. Aquascapes that mimic their natural habitat help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.
Lighting: Moderate lighting works best for Discus tanks, as bright lights can stress them. The red coloration of the Red Melon Discus looks particularly stunning under natural or soft lighting.
Social Nature: The Red Melon Discus is a calm and peaceful fish. It thrives in a social setting with other Discus or similarly non-aggressive fish species. Keeping them in groups helps them feel secure and less stressed.
Tankmates: Ideal tankmates for Red Melon Discus include tetras, peaceful cichlids, dwarf gouramis, plecos, and corydoras. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fast-swimming species, as Discus are slow swimmers and prefer tranquil environments.
Feeding: Red Melon Discus are omnivores. A varied diet is key to maintaining their health and enhancing their color. Feed them high-quality Discus pellets or flakes, along with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Feed them small portions 2-3 times a day.
