Description
ADA Rotala macrandra 'Compacta' is a stunning, popular aquarium plant from the Rotala genus. Known for its small, compact growth form and vibrant colors, it is a sought-after choice for aquascaping, particularly in planted tanks where it can add color contrast and texture. This variety is often available as a Tissue Culture (TC) Live Plant, which ensures it’s free from pests, diseases, and algae.
Appearance:
- Leaves: Rotala macrandra 'Compacta' features small, elongated leaves that are typically a bright green or red depending on lighting and nutrient conditions. Under high lighting and proper care, the plant can develop vibrant red hues along the edges of the leaves.
- Size: The 'Compacta' variety is much smaller than other forms of Rotala macrandra, typically growing to around 3–6 inches (7–15 cm) in height. This makes it an excellent choice for aquascaping in midground or foreground areas.
- Growth Form: It has a bushy and dense growth habit, with the stems branching frequently. The compact size and branching make it ideal for creating textured areas within aquascapes.
Care Requirements:
- Lighting: Rotala macrandra 'Compacta' requires moderate to high lighting to develop its best colors. In lower light, the plant will stay green but may not show the intense red coloration. High lighting with adequate nutrients will encourage the red coloration and compact growth.
- Temperature: This plant thrives in warm water temperatures between 72°F and 82°F (22°C to 28°C).
- Water Parameters: It prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) and soft to moderately hard water (3–10 dKH). Stable water conditions are crucial for healthy growth.
- Substrate: Like most aquarium plants, Rotala macrandra 'Compacta' prefers a nutrient-rich substrate such as aquarium soil or fine gravel with added fertilizers. Its roots require good nutrition to support its growth.
Growth and Propagation:
- Growth Rate: This plant has a moderate growth rate. It grows relatively slowly, especially in lower light conditions. When provided with high lighting and nutrients, it will grow more quickly and develop more vibrant colors.
- Propagation: Rotala macrandra 'Compacta' propagates easily by cuttings. Simply trim the stem and replant the cuttings into the substrate. The plant will quickly develop roots and continue growing.
Common Issues:
- Algae: With higher lighting, algae growth can be a concern, particularly on the leaves. To manage algae, keep the water clean, control the nutrient levels, and trim the plant regularly to encourage healthy growth.
- Stunted Growth: If the plant is not receiving enough light or nutrients, it may become leggy, with fewer branches and pale leaves. Proper lighting, CO2 supplementation, and liquid fertilizers can help promote healthier growth.
- Crypt Melt: While not common for Rotala species, abrupt changes in water conditions (like pH, temperature, or lighting) could lead to stress, causing the plant to shed its leaves temporarily.
Benefits in Aquariums:
- Aquascaping: Rotala macrandra 'Compacta' is highly prized in the aquascaping world for its compact size and vibrant coloration. It works well as a midground plant and adds dynamic color to planted tanks.
- Fish and Shrimp Friendly: This plant is non-toxic to fish and shrimp. It can serve as a hiding place for smaller fish and shrimp, providing a safe and natural environment.
