Description

Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Gecko' is a beautiful, unique variety of Cryptocoryne wendtii that is often sold as a Tissue Culture (TC) Cup. It is a popular choice among aquascapers due to its stunning coloration and relatively easy care requirements. This plant is a great addition to both beginner and expert aquarium setups.

Appearance:

  • Leaves: The leaves of Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Gecko' are long, narrow, and slightly wavy, with a striking greenish-brown or reddish-bronze coloration, depending on the light and nutrient levels. The plant's coloration can vary significantly, with higher light intensities often bringing out more vibrant hues.
  • Size: It typically grows to about 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) in height, making it an excellent choice for midground or foreground planting in aquascapes.
  • Growth Form: The plant has a compact, rosette growth pattern. Its leaves grow from a central point and form a bushy, dense cluster.

Care Requirements:

  • Lighting: Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Gecko' is low to moderate light tolerant. Under low light, the plant may stay green, while in higher light, the reddish-brown or bronze colors become more pronounced.
  • Temperature: This plant thrives in warm, tropical conditions with a temperature range of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C).
  • Water Parameters: It prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) and moderately soft to moderately hard water (3–10 dKH). Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Gecko' is adaptable to a wide range of water conditions, making it a great plant for community tanks.
  • Substrate: Cryptocoryne plants are root feeders, so they do best in nutrient-rich substrates like fine gravel, aquarium soil, or nutrient-rich substrates like ADA Aqua Soil.

Growth and Propagation:

  • Growth Rate: It has a slow to moderate growth rate. With proper care, it will form a dense clump of foliage. New growth typically emerges from the base, allowing the plant to spread and form a nice bushy appearance.
  • Propagation: Like other Cryptocoryne species, Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Gecko' propagates via runners. The plant sends out side shoots that can be separated and replanted once they have grown large enough. This makes it easy to propagate and expand your collection of the plant.

Common Issues:

  • Crypt Melt: As with many Cryptocoryne species, Gecko can experience crypt melt when introduced to new environments or when water conditions change. This is when the plant sheds its leaves and appears to die off. However, once the plant has acclimated to its new environment, it will generally produce new growth.
  • Algae: In bright lighting, algae may grow on the leaves. Regular water changes, maintaining stable lighting, and avoiding excess nutrients will help reduce algae growth.

Benefits in Aquariums:

  • Aquascaping: The beautiful, unique coloration of Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Gecko' makes it an excellent plant for midground or foreground aquascaping. It can serve as a focal point or contrast plant alongside other aquatic plants with different textures and colors.
  • Fish and Shrimp Friendly: As a non-toxic plant, Gecko is completely safe for fish and invertebrates, including shrimp. Its dense foliage can also provide shelter for small fish and shrimp, creating a natural and healthy environment.
