Description
The Bottom Dweller Pygmy Cory (Corydoras pygmaeus) is a small and endearing freshwater fish, highly valued in the aquarium hobby for its diminutive size and peaceful nature. As one of the smallest Corydoras species, the Pygmy Cory is perfect for nano tanks and makes a lively addition to any community aquarium.
Coloration: The Pygmy Cory has a slender, silver body with a distinctive horizontal black stripe running from its snout to the base of its tail. Below this stripe, the body is lighter, often with a slightly reflective or iridescent quality. The fins are mostly transparent with a slight hint of coloration.
Size: This tiny fish typically grows to about 2.5 cm (1 inch) in length, making it one of the smallest members of the Corydoras family. Its petite size is a major part of its charm.
Body Shape: The Pygmy Cory has a streamlined, elongated body with a slightly rounded belly. Its head is relatively large for its size, with a downward-facing mouth equipped with small barbels that it uses to forage in the substrate.
Temperament: Pygmy Corys are extremely peaceful and social fish. They thrive in groups of at least 6 or more, where they exhibit more natural and active behaviors. While you mentioned keeping a single, it’s important to note that these fish are happiest and healthiest when kept in a group.
Activity: Unlike other Corydoras species that mainly dwell at the bottom, Pygmy Corys often swim mid-water, darting around the tank in small schools. They are active during the day and love to explore their environment, making them fascinating to observe.
Compatibility: Pygmy Corys are ideal for community tanks, especially with other small and non-aggressive species. Their gentle nature and small size make them suitable for nano tanks or as companions in larger, peaceful community setups.
Tank Size: A minimum of 37 litres is recommended, especially if keeping a small group. Due to their small size, Pygmy Corys don’t require a lot of space, but they do appreciate a well-planted environment with plenty of hiding spots.
Water Conditions: Pygmy Corys prefer water temperatures between 72-79°F (22-26°C) with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. They thrive in soft to moderately hard water, similar to their natural habitat in slow-moving streams.
Substrate and Decor: A soft substrate like sand is ideal to protect their delicate barbels. The tank should have plenty of plants, driftwood, and small caves to provide hiding spots and mimic their natural environment.
Feeding: Pygmy Corys are omnivores and have a varied diet. They enjoy high-quality micro-pellets, finely crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro-worms. They are also active foragers, often scavenging for tiny particles of food in the substrate.
