Description

The Malawi Peacock Cichlid Dragon Blood (Size: 2" to 2.5") is a beautiful freshwater fish species, part of the Cichlidae family, originating from Lake Malawi in East Africa. The "Dragon Blood" variety is highly popular among aquarists due to its mesmerizing colors, typically ranging from shades of bright red, orange, and pink to coral-like tones, which make it a visually striking addition to any aquarium.

Physical Appearance: At the juvenile size of 2 to 2.5 inches, the Dragon Blood Peacock Cichlid already exhibits some of its vivid coloration, but these colors intensify as the fish matures, especially under optimal conditions. Males tend to display more vibrant hues, often becoming the showpiece of any tank, while females usually exhibit paler or more subdued coloring. The fish's body is elongated, with a slightly curved dorsal fin and a fan-shaped tail, features characteristic of Peacock Cichlids. Its head may have subtle blue or metallic highlights, especially in males.

Behavior: The Dragon Blood Peacock Cichlid is semi-aggressive, displaying territorial behaviors, especially as it matures. It may chase other fish around the tank, particularly during breeding periods. However, it is generally peaceful compared to other cichlids, making it a good candidate for mixed-species tanks with other Malawi Cichlids or similarly tempered fish. Providing plenty of hiding spaces in the tank helps mitigate aggression, as it allows the fish to establish territories.

Aquascaping: The natural habitat of these fish is rocky, so including rocks, caves, and other decorations that mimic their native environment will provide the fish with hiding spots and areas to claim territory. Sand or fine gravel substrate is best suited for their environment.

Diet: Peacock Cichlids, including the Dragon Blood variant, are omnivorous. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. In captivity, they should be provided with a varied diet to maintain their health and enhance their vibrant coloration. A diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and bloodworms, is ideal. Occasional vegetables like blanched spinach or peas can also be offered. It’s important to avoid foods high in protein and fats (like beef heart) that may lead to digestive issues.

Compatibility: The Dragon Blood Peacock Cichlid does well with other species of cichlids from Lake Malawi, especially other peacock varieties, haps, and mbuna. However, care should be taken to avoid overly aggressive tankmates, and overcrowding should be avoided to reduce stress and aggressive behavior. It’s best to keep only one male per tank, as males can become very territorial with one another.
