The Malawi Haps Cichlid Electric Blue (Size 2" to 2.5") is a visually stunning juvenile from the Lake Malawi region, prized for its vibrant, iridescent blue coloration and dynamic personality. This species, known as Sciaenochromis fryeri, is commonly referred to as the Electric Blue Hap and is a favorite among aquarists for its striking appearance and relatively moderate temperament.

Appearance: At 2" to 2.5", the juvenile Electric Blue Hap already shows hints of the brilliant electric blue that will become more prominent as it matures. Its slender, streamlined body is covered in light blue scales with an iridescent quality, making it shimmer under aquarium lighting. As it grows, the intensity of the blue will deepen, and the fish may develop dark vertical barring on its body, especially when displaying dominance. The fins are slightly transparent with blue accents, and the dorsal fin often shows a pointed extension at the rear, giving it a sleek and elegant look.

Behavior and Temperament: The Electric Blue Hap is generally semi-aggressive, though it is often more peaceful than other Malawi Haps. Juveniles at 2" to 2.5" tend to be less territorial, but they will become more assertive as they grow, especially males. It is important to provide adequate space to reduce aggression, particularly during breeding or when establishing territory. This cichlid coexists well with other similar-sized Lake Malawi species, but smaller fish may be chased or harassed.

Habitat Requirements: In its natural habitat, the Electric Blue Hap inhabits rocky areas and open water. To replicate this environment in an aquarium, a setup with rocky caves and hiding spots is recommended, along with open areas for swimming. Fine sand or gravel can be used as a substrate to mimic the lakebed. The tank should be spacious, with a minimum size of 340 litres to allow for the cichlid’s active swimming habits and territorial needs. Water quality is essential for the health of the Electric Blue Hap. The ideal pH range is between 7.5 and 8.5, and the water temperature should be maintained between 76°F and 82°F. A strong filtration system is necessary to keep the water clean, as these fish are sensitive to high nitrate levels.

Diet: The Electric Blue Hap is an opportunistic feeder, thriving on a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, krill, and bloodworms. Incorporating vegetable matter, such as spirulina or blanched spinach, helps maintain the fish's vibrant coloration and overall health.
