Description

The Red Eye Tetra (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae), also known as the Red Eye Buenos Aires Tetra, is a popular freshwater fish known for its striking appearance and active behavior.

Color: The Red Eye Tetra has a silver body with a distinctive red spot around its eyes, giving it its common name. It also features a black patch at the base of its tail fin.

Size: These tetras typically grow to about 2.5 inches (6-7 cm) in length.

Fins: Their fins are generally transparent, with the tail fin often showing a slight reddish hue.

Natural Habitat: The Red Eye Tetra is native to the Paraná River basin in South America, primarily found in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.

Environment: They inhabit rivers, streams, and ponds, often in areas with dense vegetation and submerged roots.

Temperament: Red Eye Tetras are active and can be somewhat fin-nippy, especially if kept in too small a group. They are best kept in schools of six or more to mitigate this behavior.

Compatibility: They do well with other similarly sized and active fish. They should not be kept with slow-moving, long-finned fish as they might nip at their fins.

Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 113 litres is recommended for a school of Red Eye Tetras.

Water Parameters: They prefer a pH of 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water (5-20 dGH), and a temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C).

Diet: Red Eye Tetras are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods, including flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
