Description
The Discus Tiger Turquoise Fish is a visually captivating freshwater fish known for its intricate turquoise and dark tiger-like patterning. As a juvenile, this Discus is already impressive, showcasing its characteristic stripes and vibrant colors that only intensify as it matures. The combination of bold markings and a sleek body shape makes this variety highly sought after by aquarists looking to add a striking and active centerpiece to their aquarium.
Size: Measuring 2.5 to 3 inches, the Tiger Turquoise is in its juvenile stage, but it will grow up to 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) as an adult.
Color: The fish boasts a bright turquoise-blue base color, which is adorned with contrasting dark vertical stripes resembling tiger patterns. These stripes vary in thickness and run across the body and fins, giving the fish a wild and exotic appearance.
Shape: Like other Discus, the Tiger Turquoise has a round, flattened body with long, flowing fins. Its body shape and smooth, elegant movement through the water enhance its beauty.
Tank Size: A minimum of 227 litres is recommended for the Tiger Turquoise, with larger tanks being ideal if housing multiple Discus. These social fish thrive when kept in groups of at least five.
Temperature: Keep the tank water between 28°C and 30°C (82°F to 86°F).
pH: The ideal pH level ranges from 6.0 to 7.0, slightly acidic to neutral.
Water Hardness: Soft water with a hardness of 1-8 dGH is preferred.
Filtration: A strong, efficient filtration system is essential, as Discus are sensitive to water quality. Regular water changes (25-30%) are crucial to maintaining healthy conditions.
Aquascaping: The Tiger Turquoise thrives in a well-planted tank with a combination of live plants, driftwood, and rocks that offer hiding spots. However, ensure there is ample open space for free swimming. The tank should mimic their natural environment, with subdued lighting and a soft substrate.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for showcasing the fish's bright turquoise hues without causing stress.
Social Nature: The Tiger Turquoise Discus is a peaceful species that enjoys the company of others. Keeping them in groups reduces stress and encourages natural behavior.
Tankmates: Compatible tankmates include other calm, peaceful fish such as tetras, Corydoras, and small plecos. Avoid aggressive species that may intimidate or outcompete them for food.
Feeding: This Discus requires a balanced, varied diet. High-quality Discus pellets or flakes, along with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, will keep them healthy and vibrant. Feed them small amounts 2-3 times a day.
