Description
The Malawi Peacock Cichlid Yellow (2" to 2.5") is a beautiful and vibrant freshwater fish from Lake Malawi, known for its striking yellow coloration. At this juvenile stage, the fish typically displays a bright yellow or golden body with subtle blue or green accents around the fins and face, which intensify as the fish matures. Males are generally more colorful than females, often displaying bolder and more intense hues. Their iridescent yellow coloring makes them stand out, especially under aquarium lighting, and adds an appealing vibrancy to any tank.
Behavior and Temperament: Malawi Peacock Cichlids are known for their relatively peaceful nature compared to other African cichlids, making them a popular choice for community cichlid tanks. However, males can become territorial, particularly during breeding. At 2" to 2.5", the Yellow Peacock Cichlid is still developing its full territorial instincts but will begin to establish small territories within the tank. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment.
Tank Size: A minimum of 181 litres is recommended, as these cichlids are active swimmers and need space to establish territories.
Aquascape: The aquarium should include rock formations, caves, and a sandy substrate to mimic their natural habitat. Hiding spots are essential to create territories and provide places for them to retreat.
Water Parameters: Optimal water conditions include a temperature of 76-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 7.8-8.6, and moderate to hard water. These parameters replicate the water conditions of Lake Malawi, where these fish thrive.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal to highlight their bright yellow coloration.
Diet: Yellow Peacock Cichlids are omnivores with a preference for protein-rich foods. A diet consisting of high-quality pellets or flakes designed for cichlids, along with occasional treats of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, krill, and bloodworms, will keep them healthy and help maintain their vibrant color. Vegetable-based foods such as spirulina can also be added to their diet for variety.
